Postpartum Products for New Moms for a Positive Recovery

In this post, I will share all of my best postpartum products for new moms, along with a few tips and tricks I learned along the way.

new mom after delivery

As an expectant mom, I spent a lot of time wondering what I would need to take care of myself when I got home from the hospital after my first childbirth experience. On top of that, I spent even more time thinking about everything I needed to take care of my newborn. For me, education and preparation were imperative when I created my postpartum essentials list.

With so much noise on the internet, I wanted to take the most informed and effective approach to the things new moms need for themselves after birth. So, I created my own postpartum recovery checklist filled with essentials and without spending hundreds of dollars… especially without knowing if I was going to have a c-section.

Postpartum Essentials List for Mom

If your research experience has been anything like mine was, you’re probably feeling overwhelmed. I am sharing products that worked for me, and I hope they work for you, too. There are quite a few options for postpartum products for new moms. Let’s get into my favorite ones:

Postpartum Bleeding Products

Postpartum Diapers for Mom

One of the best tips I got in my postpartum preparation was to purchase Depends (or disposable underwear) versus pads for the first few days after birth. The Depends are so much more comfortable, absorbent, and keep you feeling clean. Plus, who wants to ruin their underwear with lackluster pads? Depends are a great thing to purchase before birth because you will likely need them whether you have a vaginal birth or a c-section (yes, you bleed no matter what!).

Here are the disposable underwear products I used in my postpartum recovery:

Sanitary Pads

After you move away from the disposable underwear life (I was done with them around 1 week), you may still experience bleeding. I bled for about 2 weeks and used pads regularly for a full week. Like a period, I bled heavily at first and then slowly trickled down to nothing. With that being said, I would recommend you have a pack of heavy flow postpartum (period) pads ($11) and a few lighter weight options on hand (maybe even some panty liners).

Postpartum Pain Products

Dermoplast

Do you feel like you’re spraying your undercarriage down with cooking spray when you use this Dermoplast ($8)? Yes, but wow, it’s cooling, healing, and keeps things moist. Our hospital sent us home with 2 bottles of this postpartum product, but I think it’s a must-have on hand. I layered this into my underwear and pads, too.

Tucks Postpartum Pads (Witch Hazel Pads)

Women love these witch hazel postpartum pads ($8) to layer into their disposable underwear or pad. It keeps things cool, soothing, and healing. I used them, but I got annoyed by how quickly they moved around. They’re nice to have on hand, and our hospital provided them.

Postpartum Hemorrhoids

If you’re one of the chosen ones (God’s bravest soldiers) who have dealt with hemorrhoids in life and/or in pregnancy, my hunch is that you’ll probably have the need for some postpartum hemorrhoid care after birth – especially if you find yourself constipated (we’ll talk about that in a minute). My hemorrhoids ended up getting so bad that I needed to make a call to my OB, but Preparation H ($8) is great to have on hand. You can also do sitz baths.

Stool Softeners

You’ve probably heard about the infamous first bowel movement after birth. Never fear. Hydration and stool softeners (without laxatives) ($10) are your friend! I brought stool softeners to the hospital and started taking them after my very first meal (which was a Diet Coke and a ham and cheese hoagie from Wawa, if you were curious). This made all the difference for me in having one less painful thing to deal with after birth!

Frida Mom Postpartum Essentials

In my personal experience (and many other women’s), Frida Mom postpartum products for new moms are elite! They are definitely made with a recovering mother in mind, they’re priced appropriately, and they bring humor to their packaging.

Frida Mom Ice Packs

In the first few days after birth, these Frida Mom postpartum ice packs were a lifesaver. And the best part? They don’t need to go in the freezer. I kept them right by the toilet, cracked them open, shook them, and laid them right into my disposable underwear.

Frida Mom Perineal Spray

In my disposable underwear and sometimes right on the ice pack, I would put this Frida Mom Perineal Foaming Spray ($11). It was so soothing, reduced pain, and kept things moist down there (sorry, I know that’s a loaded word). To me, this is a non-negotiable product that I’ll have on hand for baby #2.

Frida Mom Peri Bottle

Made and trademarked by God himself, this Frida Mom Peri Bottle ($12) is a postpartum essential and belongs on every new mom’s registry. The bottle that the hospital gives you is true garbage, comparatively. Put a little warm water in the bottle, spray the undercarriage, and you will feel relieved and clean! To me, this is another non-negotiable product that I’ll have on hand for baby #2.

Frida Mom Postpartum Recovery Essentials Kit

I think this is a great all-in-one Frida Mom postpartum essentials kit ($50) filled with postpartum products for new moms who want their life made easy! It is important, however, to mention that the underwear comes in only one size. It gets great reviews!

Frida Mom Hospital Bag Kit

For the new moms looking to make their lives even easier, this Frida Mom Hospital Bag Kit ($200) is filled with basic postpartum essentials that are great to have on hand in the hospital and at home. The kit also includes a comfortable hospital gown and bag! And you will definitely need that cute hair clip when it comes time to push! It is important, however, to mention that the gown and underwear come in only one size.

C-Section Postpartum Care

Although I didn’t have a c-section, I want to give a little love to the mothers who will. Here is a great Frida Mom postpartum c-section recovery kit ($90) option to have on hand, order from your hospital bed, or grab for a friend in need.

Old Navy Jersey Pajama Sets

I ordered 5 of these Old Navy jersey pajama sets from Old Navy ($45 full price) before Magnolia was born. I wore two pairs in the hospital, and all 5 were in constant rotation. I sized up for postpartum recovery comfort. They’re so cozy, make you feel put together and cute, and you’ll have easy access to the boobs for breastfeeding. Stock up in every color!

Postpartum recovery is hard, but it can be made a little cuter, a little more comfortable, and less stressful with the right preparation. I hope this helps you and the fellow moms in your life! If you have feedback (maybe I missed a must-have!), please let me know by emailing me or leaving a comment!
